There are only two types of consumers who buy counterfeit products:
- consumers who knowingly buy a counterfeit product,
- consumers who purchase a counterfeit good believing it to be a genuine one.
In the first case, the brand is facing a marketing problem. Either the consumer is in total ignorance of the quality and service values attached to the product, or, for financial reasons, he would never buy a product of the brand. This consumer might well never become a client of the brand; or alternatively, the brand's marketing focused purely on image, and so it has not managed to convey to consumers the advantages of its products.
In the second case, the appearance, price criteria or the apparent quality of the product are not always enough for the consumer to distinguish the genuine product from the forgery. In some industries, counterfeiters use production methods which make the fake product appear identical to the real one. Only the use of the product, or the intervention of a brand expert, enable one to make the distinction.
